Local knowledge

What Padang Padang is really like

Padang Padang, often called the Balinese Pipeline, is one of the heaviest waves in Bali. It is a hollow left that breaks over shallow, sharp reef on the Bukit Peninsula, and a wipeout there is serious. This is an expert wave, not a place we would ever take a beginner.

It is also fickle. The wave needs a solid southwest swell, the right tide and clean wind all lining up, and that only happens on a small number of days each season. When it is not firing, the reef next door at Baby Padang is far more forgiving and suits confident intermediates working on green waves.

We treat Padang Padang as a guided surf tour spot for advanced surfers only, and as a place to watch when the swell is up. The call is always made on the day, with safety, tide timing and the crowd all weighed up before anyone paddles out.

Is it right for you?

Not a beginner or intermediate lesson spot. The main left is for expert surfers only. Confident intermediates are better at the nearby Baby Padang section on a guided session.

Getting there

Padang Padang is on the Bukit Peninsula, well south of Canggu, reached down a stepped path through a rock formation. Allow plenty of travel time. For guided tours we confirm pickup and tide timing before you go.

FAQ

Padang Padang questions

What people ask us most about this break. Message us if your question is not covered.

Can beginners surf Padang Padang?

No. The famous Padang Padang left is a heavy, hollow barrel over shallow reef and is for expert surfers only. Beginners should start at Batu Bolong or another mellow Canggu beach break.

What is Baby Padang?

Baby Padang, also called Padang Padang Right, is the gentler section beside the main wave. It is far more forgiving and can suit confident intermediates on a mid to high tide, usually as part of a guided session.

When does Padang Padang work?

It needs a solid, long-period southwest swell, the right tide and clean wind, which only line up on a handful of days each dry season. We only call it on the day.

Do you run lessons at Padang Padang?

We do not run beginner lessons there. For advanced surfers, Padang Padang can fit a guided surf tour focused on safety, timing and reading the reef. We will be honest about whether your level suits it.
