Surfing Canggu, a local guide

Canggu is one of Bali's best places to learn. Here's how the main breaks work and how to get the most from your sessions.

The breaks

Where to surf around Canggu

Each wave suits a different level. On lessons and tours we choose the spot based on your ability, the tide and the crowd that day.

Batu Bolong

Beginner to Intermediate

Our home break. A long, forgiving wave over a mellow bottom, the ideal place to learn and the heart of the Canggu surf scene.

Best in: Mid tide, smaller swell, mornings before the crowd

Echo Beach

Intermediate to Advanced

A punchier reef-bottom wave just up the coast. Faster and more powerful, where you head once your pop-up is solid.

Best in: Mid to high tide, clean swell

Berawa

Beginner to Intermediate

Beach break south of Batu Bolong with peaks that shift along the sand. A good change of scene when our home break is crowded.

Tips

Surf Canggu smarter

  • Surf early. Mornings are cleaner, lighter wind and far less crowded than the afternoon sessions.
  • Mind the tide. Most beginner waves around Canggu work best on mid tide, so we time lessons to it.
  • Respect the lineup. Paddle wide, don't drop in, and smile. Local etiquette goes a long way here.
  • Wear reef protection. Some Canggu breaks have rock and reef sections; booties and awareness help.
  • Hydrate and sunscreen up. Tropical sun plus paddling drains you faster than you'd expect.

FAQ

Learning to surf in Canggu

What beginners ask us most about surfing here. Message us if your question is not covered.

Do I need any surfing experience?

None at all. Most people who book with us have never stood on a board. We start on the beach, then get you riding whitewater the same session. Most first-timers are up and grinning on day one.

What should I bring?

Just swimwear, a towel, sunscreen and water. We provide the surfboard and a rash guard. Leave the rest, we have got the gear sorted.

Can kids learn? Is there an age limit?

Yes, kids are welcome and they often pick it up fast. We tailor the session to age and confidence. Message us with your child's age and we will set it up right.

Is it safe? I am a nervous beginner.

Safety comes first, every session. Viccy is a working lifeguard and reads the ocean instinctively. We keep ratios low, brief you properly, and stay close in the water. Nervous beginners are our favourite people to teach.

How much does a lesson cost and how do I book?

Pricing depends on group size, level and how many days you surf with us, so we confirm it when you enquire. The quickest way to book is WhatsApp. Send your dates and level and we will sort the rest.

Where are you and how do I get there?

Our home break is Batu Bolong Beach in Canggu, Bali, and we run lessons and guided surfs at spots across Bali. It is easy to reach us by scooter or taxi. We send the exact meeting point when you book.

When is the best time of year to surf in Bali?

Honestly, Bali works year round for learning. The dry season around April to October is classic, but we run beginner-friendly sessions all year and pick the right spot and tide for the day.

What happens if the weather or surf is bad?

We watch the conditions and the tide and time your session for the best window. If the ocean is not safe or workable, we reschedule you. No drama, we want you to have a good time.
